What REALLY causes churches to close?

In this week’s Word for the Week, Simon travels to the only thermal spring in Wales at Ffynnon Taf to explore one of the most sobering passages in the New Testament: Revelation 3:14–22 and Christ’s warning to the church in Laodicea.

This is not merely a discussion about declining attendance, secularisation, ageing congregations, or cultural change in rural Wales. Those things matter, but Revelation suggests there is a deeper problem still.

The church at Laodicea believed itself healthy, wealthy, stable and spiritually secure. Christ’s diagnosis was devastatingly different.

“You say, ‘I am rich… I need nothing.’ But you do not know…”

In this extended 35-minute Bible exposition, Simon explores:

- Why churches really close
- The meaning of “lukewarm” Christianity
- Covenant indictment in Isaiah and Revelation
- Spiritual self-deception
- Why Christ stands outside the church door
- The danger of functional self-sufficiency
- Why external success can hide internal collapse
- How discipline and rebuke can actually be signs of divine love
- What rural Welsh churches - and all Christians - urgently need to hear about a significant threat 'successful' churces face.

This is a serious and deeply pastoral study aimed particularly at committed Christians, church leaders, preachers, elders, rural congregations, theological students, and anyone concerned for the spiritual condition of the contemporary church.
