What does greatness look like?
In Mark 10, Jesus walks ahead of his friends on the road to Jerusalem and tells them exactly what is coming: arrest, mockery and a cross. Many in His day expected a Messiah who would crush the Roman invaders.
Jesus chose something harder and better: love that walked towards the cost of setting us free.
But Jesus simply didn't fit what people expected of the Messiah.
First-century Jewish people expected a political deliverer who would overthrow their Roman oppressors and bring them liberty and prosperity.
Jesus came to deal with a deeper problem, our need for rescue from the consequences of our troubles within ... and He did it by giving his life.
What does Mark 10 say about Jesus going to Jerusalem?
Jesus leads the way up the road, fully aware of what awaits him, and openly predicts his arrest, mockery and death. He is choosing the cross, not being caught by it.
What does Jesus’ greatness look like?
Not force deployed against us, but self-giving love that goes toward the cost so that we can live an undeserved, glorious and forever life.
