Super Short Thought || Take This Cup? || Mark 14:36

In the worst hour of his life, Jesus didn’t make a speech.
He said one word: Abba, Father.
Then he asked honestly for the cup to be taken away, and in the same breath trusted his Father with the answer.

Gethsemane shows that faith doesn’t mean hiding your fear. It means bringing all of it to the Father.

“Abba, Father, all things are possible for you. Remove this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.” (Mark 14:36, ESV)

Quick answers:

What does Abba mean?

Ἀββά (Abba, the Aramaic word for father) is the warm, family word a child would use for their father. Mark keeps the original Aramaic and then translates it for his readers: Ἀββὰ ὁ πατήρ (Abba ho patēr, Abba, Father).

What is “the cup” Jesus asks to be taken away?

ποτήριον (potērion, cup) is an Old Testament picture of suffering and of God’s judgement against sin (see Psalm 75:8; Isaiah 51:17; Jeremiah 25:15). Jesus is facing the cross and everything it would mean.

Is it wrong to tell God I’m afraid?

No. Jesus himself prayed honestly about what he wanted, and then surrendered to his Father’s will. Honesty and trust belong together in the same prayer.

Where is Gethsemane?

A garden at the foot of the Mount of Olives, just outside Jerusalem, where Jesus prayed on the night he was arrested (Mark 14:32-42).
